Dear Phistophicles,
I attend a small Midwestern university and study Philosophy. I am having trouble with Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”. Can you please explain?
Thanks,
Andrew S.
Dear Andrew,
Wow, at the beginning, I thought this was a Penthouse Forum letter. Anyway, obviously Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” is very important, it has to do with shadows on the wall of the cave…and being chained up…I’m not sure what it means exactly but I do know Plato used to spend a lot of time in caves just in general…we were always like “where’s Plato?” “Oh, he’s probably in a cave somewhere”…he must have figured he needed to come up with some kind of cave allegory just to explain why he was always hanging out in caves…I don’t know, some of these other philosophers are really nuts…I could tell you some stories…
Dear Phistophicles,
I’m traveling to NYC in July and always wanted to go to a Greek Diner. Any tips?
Love,
Cindy
Dear Cindy.
Keep it simple. Socrates always used to say you can’t go wrong with a grilled-cheese. Definitely avoid anything that’s described as home made… like meat loaf or lasagna… you don’t know what’s in that…
Dear Phistophicles,
Why did the ancient Greeks wrestle in the nude?
Just curious,
Phil
Dear Phil,
Don’t knock it til you tried it.
Dear Phistophicles,
Who do you root for in the Olympics?
Best regards,
Tim L.
Dear Tim.
Greece.
Dear Phistophicles,
I’m contemplating breast implants but haven’t made up my mind. Any advice?
Thanks,
Lois
Dear Lois,
Since you haven’t made up your mind, I suggest you just get one. That way you can try it out and see if you like the way it feels.
Dear Phistophicles,
Who killed Kennedy?
Hmm?
Oliver
Dear Oliver,
Someone killed Kennedy? The VJ?
